Bill changed my life, and helped me to see my darkest pain, as actually the beginning of a new ride. A ride full of empathy for all those who suffer, and a world where my art has been honed into a well-oiled craft. My thoughts and observations, used to be just anger, suppressed and looking for a way out.
But, in the last few months, left in ungodly pain,,at times, due to a government and a pharmaceutical industry that offered me no warning about a drug they prescribed, when I was 19, for a simple anxiety attack.
It turns out that is the most addictive drug on the planet (xanex, and it's fellow benzos). I have harnessed the observations into notebooks of furious rants and attcks on our society's ineptitude. But, in reality, I believe in the core good' of mankind.
The rants have been turned into jokes, of a twisted and uncompromising sort. But, I'm not concerned with money, tv, none of it. Just speaking to the few who might listen.
RIP Bill

You are right. This is a good read. I am a big fan of Bill Hicks and to not have a mention of Bill or at least one post in this entire blog devoted to one of my heros would be a shame.

I think sometimes we can underestimate the power of laughter. Bill is one of the few people who has had made me roar with laughter again and again and again. His work has transcended the time it was written and each day new generations of young people are being turned on to Bill's genius. Hicks will make me laugh a million more times because even though I have heard a lot of the sketches before, it is not about the words, it's about the passion, the charisma and the heartfelt message which ran through his work.

It was honest and sincere. And this is why comedians like Lenny Bruce and Hicks will outlast them all.

To me, Bill Hicks was not a 'dark poet'. He was a bright beacon of light in a world of darkness. A truly great man who went against the grain and against the establishment and stood by his beliefs. He never took the easy route and compromised who he was for the sake of a few more zeros on the bank account. He was far too dignified for that.

Bill Hicks is something to inspire to. Something to be. We may not all be blessed with his wit but we can still try to live our lives in such a dignified manner putting people before profits, love before greed and true happiness before material wealth.

RIP Bill.

Very good post.

We need more comics in the tradition of Lenny Bruce.
